About Us

The Psychiatry department in CMC Ludhiana was started in the year 1970 by Dr Ernest Romesh Chander who was the founder head and did his post graduate training psychiatry from AIIMS-Delhi and the prestigious John Hopkins University (U.S.A). Over the last 55 years, the department has made tremendous progress and prides itself in providing comprehensive and meticulous services. It is the first department in a medical college of Punjab to have a neuromodulation unit with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

The department presently performs detailed workup for all psychiatric conditions in all age groups along with state-of-the-art neuromodulation procedures such as electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (r-TMS). The inpatient services along with work up are taken care of sincere and efficient specialists, technical and nursing staff. Besides patient service, we are also actively engaged in furthering medical education. Our department provides internship for psychology students.  The department is actively involved in research with many undergraduate, collegiate level and national level research projects.

The out-patient department (OPD) caters to over 20,000 patients a year including outreach programmes and numerous mental health awareness campaigns. The in-patient department is taking care of 500 admitted patients every year and performing over 200 neuromodulation procedures including ECT and TMS in a year.

With the Almighty’s guidance and grace, we are confident of continuing our work to provide affordable and standardized care to the people of the region and beyond.
