The Superspecialty department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology deals with problems related to the digestive tract and related system including Liver, Biliary system, and the Pancreatic gland. The department caters to the patient-care, in addition as teaching and training to the undergraduate and post-graduate medical students, nursing and paramedical staff, plus research activities.

The department boasts of a well-equipped endoscopy suit and well-trained endoscopy technicians, aided by the nursing and helper staff to meet day to day clinical challenges. All the Endoscopy procedures, routine or complicated are being performed by the well trained Faculty members.

The department has served as an important tertiary care center in north India, for various ailments related to the GI tract and the liver under its jurisdiction. Since over 15 years the department has crossed many milestones in treating these disorders and is a preferred destination to get benefits out of it.

 

 

The Department of General Surgery was established in 1953 by Professor Forrest Cary Eggleston MD, from the Cornell University, New York, USA. The department has many ‘firsts’ to its credit in this part of the country, to name a few: “pyramidal (American) system of surgical residency training, use of ventilator, intravenous use of Potassium, peritoneal dialysis, open heart surgery, Journal Club, MCh urology, thoracoplasty, vascular surgery and laparoscopic surgery.

The Northern Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), was founded by Professor F C Eggleston.

The concept of “Tumor Board Meeting” for the comprehensive care of cancer patients was started first time here in 1953. For safe surgical care to our patients, weekly Mortality meeting was started at the same time and has been an integral part of our surgical education and training program.

At present, the Department of General Surgery is being headed by Dr. Parvez David Haque. It has four independent units and each unit subspecializes in a surgical field beside general surgery e.g., Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Vascular Surgery.

CMC Ludhiana is one of the first institutions in North India to offer comprehensive treatment to cancer patients including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy & palliative care since 1970s. Medical Oncology services were first established at CMC Ludhiana by Dr Alex Zachariah in 1974 after completing his training in Indianapolis from 1969 to 1972. He trained various other doctors during his stay at CMC Ludhiana. Dr Sewa Singh Legha, who is a CMC Alumnus and a medical oncologist of international repute, has been a constant source of inspiration for the doctors and patients in this institution. He has been instrumental in developing and upgrading the oncology services at CMC Ludhiana. Dedicated Medical Oncology services has been  re-established in September 2018 when Dr Ashwin Oommen Philips joined back CMC after 3 years of DM training in Medical Oncology at Cancer Institute Adyar (Chennai) which is one the premier cancer institutes in the country.

The team caters to a wide variety of patients with solid tumors primarily including breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, upper GI cancers, hepatobiliary tract cancers, head & neck cancers and genito-urinary tract cancers and other rare types of cancers like sarcomas, germ cell tumors & brain tumors. Most cancer patients need multidisciplinary care and medical oncology works in close association with various surgical units, surgical specialities, radiation oncology unit and medical units and their specialties to provide comprehensive care to all the cancer patients. The team strongly believes in Evidence Based Medicine & actively participates in healthy discussions in weekly Institutional Tumor Board meetings. The aim of the department is to make CMC Ludhiana, a comprehensive cancer care center with state of the art facilities and treatments..

We have well equipped day care facilities with trained and dedicated chemotherapy staffs, where all kinds of chemotherapy, immunotherapy can be delivered.

We have round the clock emergency services to handle any case with cancer and its complications.

Department of Microbiology has been developed and established by the pioneer Microbiologists and visionaries. Right from its inception, the department has set for itself high standards in diagnostics, teaching, and research. It has not only matched rather surpassed, over the years, its set goals by a progressive, proactive, pioneering, well trained and highly motivated faculty with a passion for perfection.

Microbiology Department takes care of academic needs of M.D Microbiology, MBBS, BDS, B.Sc (Nursing), BPT, Diploma in Medical laboratory technology and Allied Health Science courses.

Postgraduate teaching includes all-around the development of the candidates by involving them in regular seminars, journal clubs, administrative work, supervisory work, medical education, oral paper and poster presentation in conferences and paper publications.

Research work is given high priority and the department as a whole is actively engaged in a number of projects such as the National Surveillance System for Enteric Fever in India (NSSEFI) which is a multicentric project coordinated and Funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The department publishes 15-20 papers in well reputed National and International medical journals every year.

The Department of Nephrology in Christian Medical College, Ludhiana offers tertiary level renal care in clinical, critical care nephrology, dialysis, and renal transplantation. We are dedicated to providing the highest levels of medical care to patients, to advancing the art and science of nephrology through research and discovery, and to training physicians and investigators to become leaders in the medicine and science of nephrology.

It has a rich tradition of pioneering work in Nephrology in North India especially in peritoneal dialysis (PD), hemodialysis and renal transplantation and will continue to strive to provide the highest standards of care for patients with acute and chronic renal disease. Patients with end-stage renal disease require one of the forms of renal replacement therapy either dialysis – hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis or renal transplantation for survival.

The department has four senior nephrologists and a competent team of renal nurses, technicians and allied health personnel providing renal services round the clock with excellent back up in laboratory and clinical disciplines. The Nephrology department places temporary and tunneled dialysis access catheters and provides comprehensive management for complications of vascular access issues. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous renal biopsies are done routinely for native and transplant kidneys by Nephrologists to facilitate diagnosis of kidney disease.

The department works in close cooperation with the Departments of Urology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiology, Radiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Pathology.

Since its inception, the department has had an opportunity to develop health care for the people of Punjab and continues to look forward to opportunities to serve the people of North India in improving renal care for all through prevention and up to date modern management of renal diseases both acute and chronic.

The Neurology department in CMC is a premier department engaged in clinical practice, community work, backed by clinical research.
Clinical work and research are supported by a comprehensive electrophysiology lab with digital Video EEG machine, NCS/EMG machine, AFT (Autonomic function Tests with provision for QSART, TST), sleep lab and a neuro-Cath lab.

Our research wing comprises of 15 qualified personnel responsible for coordinating and conducting various research projects funded by India Alliance (the Wellcome Trust/DBT, India), Indian Council Medical Research, DBT, World Federation of Neurology and NIH amongst others. The various clinical trials include those for Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy.

The department boasts of world-renowned stroke specialists, Translational medicine scholars and researchers in neuromuscular diseases.

Beyond patient service and clinical research, we are also actively engaged in medical education having a highly sought after specialty DM course and undergraduate and postgraduate.

The Department of Neurosurgery at Christian Medical College Ludhiana is one of the oldest in Punjab, North West India, started as early as 1963 by Dr. K.N. Nambudripad Pioneer Neurosurgeon. It continues to maintain the standards of excellence and provides treatment for all Neurosurgical diseases with world standard treatment

Beyond our patient care, we are also engaged in the mentoring and training of medical professionals. The MCh Neurosurgery training programme duly approved by Medical Council of India was started in the year 2008 and is continuing with the admission of one MCh Resident every year.

The Department of Neurosurgery is well equipped with a dedicated Neurosurgery ICU with ventilators and overhead monitors to monitor the saturation, ECG, and NIBP.  A  Total of 35 beds are exclusively dedicated for care of Neurosurgery patients.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana was established in the year 1891 by  Dr. Edith Brown.  It is a center of excellence for patient care, education and research in the country. It provides OPD, operative, and emergency care apart from teaching and research obligations. The department teaches seventy-five undergraduate students every year. Regular teaching classes are held for students and practical aspects are taught to them by postings inwards, labor room, and operation theatres. The students are expected to work up the cases allotted to them, to discuss them with the residents and faculty, observe and assist in the surgeries and follow up the patients till discharge. The importance is given to the practical training of undergraduate as well as postgraduate students.  Eight postgraduate students are enrolled in obstetrics and gynecology every year.  During their three year stay in the department, the students learn the management of all cases General obstetrics, gynecology, high-risk pregnancy, infertility, oncology, fetal medicine, and endoscopy. The department also has special clinics in infertility, oncology, high-risk pregnancy and Gynae endocrinology (Menopausal and Adolescent Clinic). The department has an obstetric high dependency unit (HDU) for sick pregnant patients and a shared Institutional ICU for patients requiring intensive care. Keeping up with the spirit of teaching and research along with patient care, the department regularly organizes conferences and workshops in various subspecialties. Many members of the faculty are examiners to various universities, National Board of Examinations, IGNOU. As a part of commitment towards the National Family Planning program, the department has an active family planning unit which offers all the modalities of reversible and permanent methods of contraception. The Department also has an active role in the management of the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Hambrah and Bilga.

The Ophthalmology Department was established in the year 1945, the era in which Eye and ENT was a combined subject. Today the Department is equipped with latest machines for cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification), Fundus camera, OCT machine, Argon Laser, A-Scan, B-Scan, IOL master, Fundus fluorescein angiography and other modern diagnostic and surgical instruments. It has a well established optical section for fitting and dispensing all kinds of spectacles and a contact lens clinic as well. The department has the distinction of being a pioneer in the community Ophthalmology outreach programme which was started in 1958 under the guidance of Dr. Victor C Rambo and covered the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

The Department of ENT – Head & Neck Surgery at Christian Medical College is equipped to deal with all disorders related to the Ear, Nose, Sinus, Throat, Head & Neck, the Anterior Skull Base diseases in paediatric and adult patients. The expert team of senior ENT Surgeons, audiologists, speech and swallowing therapists work in close collaboration with the specialties of Neurology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Pathology for management of ENT and Head & Neck Disorders.

Our ENT care is personalized. You can be assured that we do not recommend surgery unless it is necessary. Further, our treatment does not just end with the surgery, we plan regular follow-up with all our patients post-surgery.

The Pathology Department of CMC Hospital, Ludhiana is a Premier Diagnostics Laboratory founded in 1929 under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Marjorie Sudds and is dedicated to the people of Punjab and North India. From simple blood tests to expert biopsy interpretation and molecular testing, the Pathology Laboratory is playing a vital role in diagnosing, treating and monitoring disease. The Laboratory is managed by a team of experienced and committed pathologists, along with skilled technical and ancillary staff, working around the clock to provide precise and accurate results in the shortest possible turn-around time. The Laboratory houses state-of-the-art modular systems and automated analyzers ensuring high-quality results. The Laboratory also serves as a referral center for various hospitals and clinics all over India.

The Pathology Laboratory is integrated with the Hospital Information System (HIS) to facilitate the immediate flow of results. The Diagnostic Specialities regularly participate in the External Quality Assurance Programmes from AIIMS New Delhi, CMC Vellore and International EQAS (UK). The Faculty also actively contribute in the regular Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings for Management of Cancers.

The Department is pre-eminent nationally and globally in the professional training of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to undergraduate MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Allied Health students, and specialized post-graduate training in MD Pathology since 1966, which is MCI-recognized. The Department Faculty, Residents, and undergraduate MBBS students are actively involved in research which has won many oral and poster presentation awards in conferences at the national level, and the research work is regularly published in indexed National and International journals.
