The advent of the new 1.5 Tesla Super conducting GE Signa infinity plus (With EXCITE) MRI in the city of Ludhiana, heralds the beginning of a new era in diagnostic imaging.

Apart from the fact that images are obtained in a lesser time at a much higher resolution than the other systems presently available, the real utility of this machine has in its capability to assess and even quantify body functions rather than just simple anatomical sections only. MR Spectroscopy analyses chemical composition of brain lesions, 3DCE MRA gives images of vessels comparable with that of invasive catheter angiography, CSF flow studies are very useful in hydrocephalous and syringomyelia. MRCP analyses the patients of obstructive jaundice without resorting to invasive ERCP. Cardiac MRI is the future of MRI and is excellent in assessment of ischemic, congenital, valvular and pericardial diseases. CMCH is the only centre in north India to have all these capabilities. The Diffusion and Perfusion MRI is of great value to neurologists in the early treatment of stroke, where it identifies brain tissue that can be saved by prompt treatment reversing or at least lessening the severity of the stroke.
