DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
In 1944, two laboratories were set up in the 'Old Hospital', they were
staffed by one pathologist and two technicians who managed the work and
the teaching. It is doubtful whether anyone could have foreseen the huge
expansion from this simple beginning. From 1963 to 1974, the blend of
Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry were under one Professor and in
one corridor. And it was only in 1974 that microbiology became
independent self-governing department. In 1985, part of the Microbiology
Department moved to a new building called phase three block which housed
Departmental deals with Lab. diagnosis of Microbial diseases, infection
control and prevention in the hospital.
