The Neurosurgery Department deals with
injuries of head and spinal cord. Many patients arrive as a result of
road traffic or industrial accidents; others present with brain or spine
tumour, or problems of the spinal cord. There are 20 beds in the ward.
The patient (if conscious) and his relatives is told about the
forthcoming surgery, the prognosis, and probable rehabilitation
required. After discharge the patient will be given a follow up
appointment. The Neurosurgery Hotline is the forte of the department. A
patient may phone to discuss his situation at any time, which will
alleviate anxiety and may save a visit to the hospital.
Lectures are delivered to medical and dental students. Surgical and
orthopaedic postgraduates are posted on rotation to the department. A
teaching programme for the M.Ch Neurosurgery has been approved by the
State Government and is hoped to start in 2006.The plan to start
endoscopic work is in the pipeline.
