The Division of
Neurology under the Department of Medicine was started in the year
1989 by Dr Alexander P Abraham. A state of the art Neurophysiology
lab was started one year later. The division of Neurology became an
independent Department in the year 2001. At present there are two
faculty members: Dr Yashpal Singh (Professor and Head) and Dr
Jeyaraj Durai Pandian (Professor). There are four Neurotechnologists
and two secretarial staffs. The Neurophysiology lab has a Video EEG
and an EMG/EP machine. We will be soon upgrading the Neurophysiology
lab with a newer Video EEG machine with Sleep study facilities. In
addition we will be having a dedicated Autonomic lab by Jan/Fe 2010.
The Comprehensive Stroke Program was started in December 2007 after
Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian joined back from his Stroke Fellowship training
in Australia. There are 6 dedicated acute beds where stroke patients
are managed. Intravenous thrombolysis is routinely given for
patients who come within the window period of 4 ½ hrs of stroke
onset. Beyond 4 ½ hrs till 9 hrs patients could participate in an
International trial called Desmoteplase in acute stroke.
The department has a separate Clinical Trials Office to manage all
the Neurology drug trials. Dr Yashpal Singh was the key person in
establishing this section. At present there are ongoing 6
International trials in various fields of Neurology. The Department
is involved in Clinical Research and most of the projects are self
funded from the departmental research fund. The future plans are to
start Neurology training program (DM or DNB), Neurosonology lab and
Neurointerventional treatments.
