Endoscopy was used as a diagnostic tool in the 1970s. It was
restarted in 1985. A separate Gastroenterology Unit was set up in
1991, and converted to a Department in 2002.
The department is
always accessible to patients, who may phone or call for advice on
their condition. The department attends an average of 4418 patients
in a year whereas an average of 1688 endoscopic procedures are done
annually. The majority suffer from chronic liver disease
