M.B.B.S students attended the Amritsar Mental Hospital for the
Psychiatry posting till 1970. From 1970 onwards the Director of the
Psychiatric Centre, Nur Manzil, Lucknow came as visiting lecturer and
taught the students here. 1972, an independent department was started
and named the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Psychiatry with the
approval of the Indian Medical Council and the Punjab University. Since,
its inception the department has become known for the quality of its
psychiatric service in Punjab and the neighbouring states.
The department activities are multifaceted and range from physical
treatment modalities (e.g Psychopharmacology, ECT, Lithium, Antabuse
therapy etc.) to individual therapy, psychoeducational sessions to
patient's family members, marriage counseling and family therapy for
childhood psychiatric disorders, treatment of sexual dysfunctions and de
addiction programs etc. Liaison Psychiatry with interdepartmental
referrals is an area which has benefited the patient care in the
hospital, increasing the scope of clinical work.
