:: Mobile Eye Service - Spreading
the Light Of Vision among Rural Folks ::
Following the footsteps of our Founder
Dame Dr. Edith Mary Brown, in the late fifties Dr. Victor C. Rambo,
Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology, established the Mobile Eye Service
of CMCH, Ludhiana reaching the needy in rural areas of Punjab and in its
adjoining states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar
Pradesh and sometimes the inhabitants of Rajasthan Desert. Its aims are
SERVICE, REHABILITATION & RESEARCH from the very beginning, i.e.
Location and classification of persons with visual problems in the rural
areas, collection of statistical data on causes and extent of visual
impairment, screening of village school students for visual problems,
treatment of eye diseases and surgery for the curable blind, public
education for prevention of blindness etc. Nearly all Ophthalmic
Surgical Procedures are being performed in the mobile eye hospital. The
Mobile Eye Service maintains its standard not only in its service but
also in equipment and instrument. A portable electricity generator takes
care of power failure. We lay emphasis on the FOLLOW UP programmes for
the operated patients that are carried out six to eight weeks following
surgery. Every
year approx, 25 eye camps are held and 2000 are treated for cataract of
whom 40-50% receive intra-ocular lens implants. The Mobile Eye Service
of CMCH is meeting the challenge of restoring vision and preventing
blindness through its outreach programme in the rural areas, where 80%
of our population lives.
