The Department of
Neurosurgery at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana was started
in 1963 after by Dr. K N Nambudripad. It was also a separate
department from the Dept of General surgery as early as 1970.
Our department is one of the earliest neurosurgical centre in
Northwest India. Till now, it is a prominent referral centre for
complex neurosurgical problems. In 1988 the department consisted
of 3 professors of Neurosurgery. Dr. Yashbir Dewan joined the
department in February 1998 and was the head till March 2009.
After Dr Dewan resigned Dr Tripathy was appointed as head of the
department. Dr Tripathy and Dr Grewal were professors and
heading unit I and Unit II respectively. Dr Tripathy resigned in
December 2009. Prof Sarvpreet Grewal is heading the department
since then. Dr Pranshu Bhargava has joined the department as
Assistant Professor since May 2010. Dr Sukhdeep Singh Jhawar
joined the department in November 2010 as Assistant Professor.
Since 2006 we also started MCI affiliated M. Ch. Neurosurgery
course with one resident joining per year.
The neurosurgery department deals with all kinds of complex
brain and spine related ailments. All kinds of traumatic,
oncological, vascular, pediatrics, congenital and infective
pathologies of brain and spine are managed with standard of
care. Recently, epilepsy surgery and functional neurosurgery
programs have also been started for first time in region.
