Department of Microbiology has been developed and established by the pioneer Microbiologists like Dr. Betty C Hobbs, Dr. Jagdish Rao and Dr. Prabhakar. They worked very hard over the years at CMCHospital,Ludhiana and laid down a strong foundation for the department.

Right from its inception, the departmenthas set for itself high standards in diagnostics, teaching and research. It has not only matched rather surpassed, over the years, its set goals by a progressive, proactive, pioneering, well trained and highly motivated faculty with a passion for perfection.

At present the Microbiology department is an indispensable part of the hospital and provides a wide variety of functions such as:

a)      Lab diagnosis of various infectious diseases

b)      Hospital Infection Control Programme

c)      Regular Surveillance of  water, air & food from in and around the Hospital

d)     Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programme, releasing monthly Antibiograms.

e)      Selective reporting advocating judicious use of antibiotics.

The department has following divisions:-

a)      Bacteriology Section

b)      Mycology Section

c)      Parasitology Section

d)     Serology section

e)      Virology Section

f)       Tuberculosis Lab.

g)      Blood culture Lab.

h)      Media pouring and Sterilization Unit

i)        Molecular lab with PCR

Microbiology Department takes care of academic needs of M.D Microbiology, MBBS, BDS, B.Sc (Nursing),BPT, Diploma in Medical laboratory technology and Allied Health Science courses.The department uses various innovative methods to teach undergraduate students like creative study models prepared by group of students, small group teaching, assignment completion, etc.Uncompromisingly focused on academics, the faculty uses innovative initiatives such as problem based scenarios, seminar presentations, poster competitions, student led group discussions, case based learning, debates, and computer based teachings to amalgamate the knowledge, creativity and extra-curricular abilities of the students to insure a more wholesome education. It also ensures a comprehensive study of microbiology in a more appealing manner.

Post graduate teaching includes all around development of the candidates by involving them in regular seminars, journal clubs, administrative work, supervisory work, medical education, oral paper and poster presentation in conferences and paper publications. They also work on research projects apart from thesis.

Department conducts a no. of research projects including short term student ICMR projects.

The department publishes a number of papers in well reputed National and International medicaljournals every year.

Diagnostic tests of the highest quality are performed for better patient care.

Department is allied with several projects like:

  1. ICTC, EQAS/SRL centres that deal with free HIV testing are being run in the department. These centre are attached to Punjab State AIDS Control Sciety, Chandigarh under NACO.
  2. Microbiology Lab. is the Nodal centre for diagnosis of various infectious  outbreaks in the State- Integrated Disease surveillance Project(IDSP)
  3. Alliance of surveillance of Invasive Pneumococci (ASIP)
  4. Mycology- Zygomycoses Network by Society of Indian Human and Animal Mycologists (SIHAM) –Mycology Project from October 2009 to October 2011.
  5. Mycology- SIHAM Candidemia Project April 1st 2011 onwards for one year.(Ongoing)

The incumbent faculty and staff of the department of microbiology constantly strive to uphold the rich legacy bequeathed to us, and to vindicate the promised precept of this institution, “My Work is For a King”.
