Department — PharmacologyOverview

Right from its inception, the department set for itself high standards in teaching and research. This was matched and perhaps even surpassed, over the years, by a progressive, proactive, pioneering, well trained and highly motivated faculty with a passion for perfection.

In addition to teaching medical students, the department gradually expanded its spectra to include teaching undergraduate batches from dental, nursing, physiotherapy and allied health sciences. We also train post-graduate students for the MD Pharmacology degree. The department is not only well equipped with scientific and education tools for experimental, clinical research and medical education, but also contributes to other areas in the form of clinical trials, pharmacovigilance committee, ethics committee, animal ethics committee, research group, pharmacy committee and medical education unit. We have conducted a number of DCGI approved clinical trials as well as animal studies. The department publishes a number of papers every year, including papers in good reputed international journals. All faculty members are well trained in teaching learning activities i.e. MCI basic course for medical education. Dr. Dinesh, Dr. Gagandeep and Dr. Jasleen are trained in advanced course on medical education i.e. CMCL-FAIMER fellowship. Dr. Dinesh is trained at and is a fellow of FAIMER, Philadelphia, USA. This well trained faculty contributed immensely to the growth of the department. The department contributes significantly to the CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute and MCI Nodal Centre for Faculty Development, both at CMC.

Although uncompromisingly focused on academics, the faculty uses innovative initiatives such as simulation models, problem-based scenarios, poster competitions, seminar presentations, quizzes, student led group discussions, case based learning, debates, computer feedback modules to amalgamate the knowledge, creativity and extra-curricular abilities of students to enable a more wholesome education. This also ensures a comprehensive study of Pharmacology in a more appealing manner. In fact, our annual pharmacology quiz (Pharmiz) has entered seventh year now and is being awaited by all students. Postgraduates teaching includes all around development of the candidates by involving them in regular seminars, journal clubs, administrative work, supervisory work, medical education, paper presentation in conferences and paper publication. They work on research projects apart from their thesis.

In addition to these in-house activities, we also conduct regular National level training workshops, CMEs and conferences to the advantage of potential researchers and faculty from different organizations across India and from abroad. We are often supported in this endeavor by National agencies and others such as PETA, India. The incumbent faculty and staff of the Department of Pharmacology constantly strive to uphold the rich legacy bequeathed to us, and to vindicate the promised precept of this institution, “My Work is For a King”.
