Department is involved in developing and supporting technology used
in:
Diagnosis and treatment of patients - eg physiological monitors,
pathology analysers
Surgery - eg surgical instruments, electro surgery devices, surgical
lasers medical research - eg scintillation counter
biomedical science - eg microscopes, cell counters
Biomedical device acquisition and disposal
1. Specification preparation
2. Preparing the technical components of written specifications for
purchase of assets or services. Includes investigating clients
needs, market research and clinical trials.
3. Tenders assessment
4. Technical, financial and operational assessment of tenders.
Includes pre- assessment of evaluation criteria, participation in
clinical trials, post-assessment documentation and 'conditions of
sale' preparation.
Commissioning
Involves the technical and operational activities to install
biomedical devices. Includes site preparation, scrutiny of purchase
agreement with product, acceptance testing to safety and performance
standards, negotiation of warranty conditions, asset registration,
and endorsement for payment.
Decommissioning
Involves the safe disposal of biomedical devices, asset
de-registration and site restoration.
Technology maintenance
1. Planned maintenance
Include safety inspections, routine calibrations and preventive
maintenance.
2. Unscheduled maintenance
Undertaking or managing the repair and/or recalibration of
biomedical devices.
Technology and Information management
1. Technology section
Analyze technology for its effectiveness and make
recommendations on replacement or withdrawal. Evaluate new equipment
and technology to determine suitability, efficacy and contribution
to corporate objectives.
Biomedical devices management.
Development and document maintenance program for biomedical
devices to ensure
efficacy, safety and availability for clinical use.
2. Asset management
Monitor performance and financial viability of a hospital's
biomedical devices.
3. Services contract management
Negotiate monitor and control performance and cost
effectiveness of maintenance contracts.
4. Purchase of parts
Procurement, storage, cataloguing and stock control of
components.
User training
Train staff in correct, safe and effective use of devices.
